The winter season in Fish Camp (5000 ft. elevation) and Yosemite Valley is
breathtakingly beautiful, but poses a particular challenge--winter driving.
Because weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, from the months
of November through April the California Highway Patrol and the National Park
Service REQUIRE drivers to be prepared for hazardous road conditions. Four
wheel drive vehicles must have mud/snow tires and all vehicles must carry
chains/cables.
Chains can be tricky to install and must fit properly to be of any use. If
possible, you might practice putting one on in the comfort of good weather. If
you are renting a vehicle, think about requesting 4-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Most car rental companies do not provide chains. There are several vendors in
Fish Camp and Oakhurst (the nearest town) that sell chains which will cost $30
to $120 depending on tire size. Many vendors do not allow returns on unused
chains.
